In large mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar into fluffy mixture; add egg, baking soda, salt and vanilla, mixing thoroughly. Stir in flour. Chill mixture before rolling out. Bake cookies on greased cookie sheets in 350 °F oven for 7 to 8 minutes. Decorate as desired.
